Biafra: The Decaying State of Justice in Nigerian Judiciary, As Truth Is Removed From Courtrooms

December 10, 2016

Nigeria is fast losing its sense of justice. As truth is removed from the courtrooms and from every area of public life, so goes the source of justice. The Buhari-led Nigerian government came with so many promises of "Change", but little did the masses know that this horrible 'change' will cause its justice system to decay to a point of no redemption. Buhari upon assumption into the office of the presidency, also took over the position of the Chief Justice of the Federation (CJN).

Throughout the history of Nigeria, there have been countless atrocities committed due to the cruel and irrational impulses of tyrants in power. This includes barbaric ways of torturing innocent civilians during the ages of monarchy and dictatorships, the bloodshed that occurred during horrific wars and political unrest, and the destruction of the environment due to the greed of modern corporate giants.

After all those years of callous cruelty, we are gradually evolving into a more humane and conscious civilization. Today, most people in the world have access to more rights and privileges than our ancestors ever had. This is all because of the sacrifices that were made by pioneers who refused to accept the status quo like Nnamdi Kanu. They were determined to fight for their rights by challenging the poor system.

There are innumerable historical exemplars of freedom fighters and social activists like Nnamdi Kanu from various nations. Prominent figures such as Joan of Arc, Martin Luther King, Gandhi, Malala Yousafzai, and other lesser-known individuals dedicated their lives to championing their specific causes. Some were even killed and humiliated in the process because of the often controversial stand that they took on pertinent issues.
On one hand, politically incorrect rulings with lots of legal precedent have been handed down by the Nigerian high courts and on the other, anti-family and anti-religious bigotry are still on the rise and being upheld by courts at every level.

Court decisions have all but mandated the replacement of truth with secular humanism and most times, sentimental. Eastern mysticism, New Age pantheism, and almost any other religiously oriented philosophy is accepted freely, while anything that even hints of a truth, value system is scorned and reviled in the Nigerian courts.

It’s not just the courts which are affected either. As truth is removed from every aspect of public life, so the source of justice is also removed from our legislatures and enforcement agencies. As truth is removed from our schools, children are no longer being taught the virtues of justice. While all these are happening, crime is raging in our streets.

It is apparent that we have lost our legal and moral moorings because we have lost contact with the very touchstone of law and order.

Take a beautiful green earth, full of blooming life and dripping dew beads, and watch Nigeria completely wreak havoc on it. After all, such is her nature– to destroy nature. No matter how far Nigeria goes as a country, through whatever triumph, there always exists a lingering corruption that is unshakable in Nigeria, and deeply rooted into the heart of every Nigerian which manifestation we have witnessed in Nigerian courts today.
