Biafra: The Price of Treachery and Sabotage

August 16, 2019

By Princewill Akubumma | for Biafra Writers

The English dictionary defines treachery as betrayal of trust and sabotage as causing irreparable damage to a cause or to the collective interest of the people. Unfortunately, these two action words are the bedrock upon which the leaders of South-East advance their political ambitions. The dire consequences such action could generate mean nothing to them.

Calamity befalls a people when they fail to learn from history. Many nations and ethnic nationalities in Nigeria today are passing through tribulations as a result of sabotage and treachery.  Their fathers, seeking one favour or the other, had sold out in the past.

The story of Afonja is a good case study. For self-gain, he called in the Fulani to help him fight his own people. The consequences of his action came later when he got assassinated by the same Fulani he invited and Ilorin turned an Emirate with allegiance to Sokoto Caliphate. The story is same with Hausas and other indigenous people of the North whose forefathers aided Othman Dan Fodio in his conquest. Today their descendants are all suffering.

During the genocidal war of 1967 – 1970, the Nigerian government then led by Gen Yakubu Gowon, invited mercenaries from the Sahel region and other regions of Sub-Saharan Africa to help them decimate Biafra. These heartless and cold-blooded mercenaries called Gwodo Gwodo, which literally means “sweepers,” carried out much of the atrocious crimes we heard after the war. Whenever the federal troops overran a Biafran town, Gwodo Gwodo will move in for mop-up operation, putting under the sword any living thing found. They would gorge out people’s eyes, rip open the stomach of pregnant women, smash the babies, and even bury people alive.

The Gwodo Gwodo, it must be understood, are the wandering Fulanis from the Sahel. Today they have teamed up with their brothers brought in by Othman Dan Fodio to unleash terror on the indigenous people.

Not learning a thing from history, the governor of Ebonyi State, Dave Umahi, is selling his people out to the dangerous Fulani race just to obtain political favour. Lured with the deceptive promise of 2023 presidential slot, Dave Umahi has gone hare-way in his anti-Biafra war.  Umahi is banning IPOB in Ebonyi state while romancing with the Fulani that has been killing our people.

Dave Umahi cannot claim ignorance of the menace of the Fulani herdsmen for he has once acknowledged the terror they unleash on our people. Yet rather than ban the activities of Fulani herdsmen and their parent body, Myetii Allah, the non-thinking governor is bringing his hammer down on IPOB.

The slavish governor must be reminded that every act of sabotage and treachery against one’s own people has severe consequences. Whosoever that condones evil will one day be haunted by the same evil without mercy. Dear governor, learn from Afonja.
