Anambra guber: Lawyer laments heavy deployment of security forces ahead of Saturday’s poll

An Enugu-based human rights lawyer and political analyst, Mr. Chris Nwankwo, has condemned Federal government’s deployment of joint security operatives including military troops to Anambra State ahead of Saturday’s governorship election.

According to the legal practitioner, the Federal government through the deployment was acting as though it is engaging in a war with Anambra residents in a supposed democratic process that should be devoid of any form of military incursion or interference by the security agencies.

Nwankwo piqued the rationale behind the Army’s deployment of more than 10,000 armed soldiers, 5,000 Naval officers including War gunboats and Amoured Personal Carriers(APC) to the State to participate in a free and democratic process, adding that this is capable of jeopardising Nigeria’s fragile democracy and endangering the lives of potential voters.

In his statement, “The deployment of joint security Forces, including 10,000 military troops, 5000 men from the Navy along with their War gunboats, fighterjets and APCs by the Federal government to Anambra State ahead of the guber race on Saturday has left much to be desired.

“We wonder if Anambra has become a war zone that will warrant the deployment of such multitude of security agents that is capable of not only putting the lives of our people in danger but also has intent to jeopardise the country’s nascent democracy.

“Even as 26,000 Policemen as announced by the IGP and a good number of other civil security outfits has been dispatched to the State, we wonder the role of the Army in a democratic process that should be devoid of any form of military incursion.

“If the Federal government should deploy such a heavy amount of armed security men in just an ordinary governorship election that will only last for few hours, how many will it deploy during the 2019 presidential election?

“We expect the government to seriously thread with caution in this election and allow the masses to continue to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere that once greeted the State before the infiltration of security men.

“In the same vein, I urge Anambra residents to be wary of the danger and threat to lives posed by these security agents who may decide to abandon their line of duty to molest the electorates. I believe that no one should lose his or her life for the sake of this election.”
