EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT TO DEBATE NNAMDI KANU'S ILLEGAL DETENTION AND CASES OF GROSS VIOLATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS AGAINST BIAFRANS BY BUHARI

Muhammadu Buhari Addressing The European Parliament
Following series of concrete reports of human right abuses in Nigeria by the requests of various Human Rights Organizations, some World Leaders, the UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-Moon and other concerned well-meaning organizations and pursuant to Rule 135 of the Rules of Procedure, the European Council has moved a motion against the cases of gross human rights violations, undermining of democracy and brutal disrespect and/or disregard to the rule of law, against the Muhammadu Buhari -led government of Nigeria.

Part of the motion for resolutions and recommendations drafted by the Parliament to be discussed in the agenda for the debate on the violation of Human Rights of the Indigenous People of Biafra and its leader, Nnamdi Kanu(POC), included:

- The call on the Federal government of Nigeria to ensure the humane and fair treatment of prisoners, including the detained Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu(POC), and to uphold the law of international human rights in ensuring his access to fair hearing/trial in court.
- The violent responses/dispositions of the Nigerian security operatives to civil disturbances, demonstrations and agitations for an independent and/or sovereign state of Biafra by Pro-Biafra protesters.
- Urges the Nigerian government to ensure the freedom of conscience and expression of its citizens throughout the country.
- To take a critical look at the special investigation panel set-up by the Nigerian Army to investigate allegations of grave violations and abuse of human rights by its security forces which involves the killings, torture, illegal arrests, enforced disappearances or abductions.

On the issue of the IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, the European Parliament is expected to wade into his human rights abuses and his continued incarceration by the Nigerian government amidst their inability to produce any tangible evidence against him.
Recall that Kanu has been in detention since October last year after his illegal arrest while returning from London, due to his pursuit and exercise of rights to self-determination and liberation for the Biafran citizens of the Eastern region of Nigeria and his outspokenness against the innumerable injustices meted out on Biafrans by the Nigerian State.

His arrest sparked a huge wave of unprecedented peaceful protests both locally and internationally by the Indigenous People of Biafra, other Pro-Biafra groups and supporters sympathetic to the Biafran cause which led to the aggressive and violent clamping down of the local protesters in Nigeria.
Also, in a letter dated 8 December, sent by Dr. Jonathan Levy; the Chief Administrative Officer of the Organization of Emerging African States(OEAS) to the European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security, Mrs Federica Mogherini, the OEAS had requested the EU to utilize their good office to help bring about a referendum for Biafra's independence.

The OEAS also called for the release of all Biafran political prisoners including Kanu(POC), a stand down of Nigerian security forces and a need for a snap referendum to determine the political freedom of the people of Biafra.
In her response on 18th January to Biafra agitators and the OEAS, Mogherini stressed that though the European Union holds strong diplomatic and economic ties with Nigeria, the protection of human rights and fundamental freedom remains a priority for the EU, tasking the Nigerian government and authorities to respect such rights in every occasions.

With this recent motion for resolution by the EU Parliament, it is now certain that they have heeded to the call and are now interested in the plight/travails of Biafrans and the outcome of the court case between Nnamdi Kanu and the Nigerian government, coupled with the monitoring of Nigeria on the influx of many cases of human rights violation of Biafrans, Shiites and other groups by the Nigerian security forces.

We beckon upon the EU to ensure that justice is not tarried or miscarried, as Biafrans are counting upon all Parliamentarians to give credence to our noble cause and call for referendum, which to us will be the only ultimate and viable resolution to dampening the rising tension in the polity called Nigeria.
