ESN: Let the People Decide and Not the Southeast Governors

I make bold to say that neither Dave Umahi nor any Eastern politician has the moral right to speak for the people of the region following their criminal silence towards the plight of our people. It is this their silence that necessitated the floating of Eastern Security Network by Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

Southeastern Nigeria is the only region in the six geopolitical zones in the country where the leaders are so docile, lame and un-proactive in matters concerning the security of the people they govern. Comfortable as stooges to the Sokoto Caliphate, they readily trade their people for personal political gains. What more, their families are abroad far away from dangers, so what do they care? The rest could be tied at the neck and led to the abattoir.

Having lost patience, the people of eastern region unanimously passed a vote of no confidence on their politicians.

The chairman of the Southeast governor's forum, Dave Umahi , was on Friday, the 18th of December 2020, quoted as saying that the Eastern Security Network is not needed in the region, claiming that the region is the most peaceful in the country. A range of questions thus comes to mind.

(i) Is Southeast the safest and most peaceful region yet Fulani herdsmen invaded Uzo-Uwani community and killed over thirty villagers in one night?

(ii) Is Southeast the most peaceful region yet the terrorists Fulani herdsmen raped to death a young girl of 23 in her father’s farmland in Enugu community and killed countless others?

(iii) Is the region so peaceful and secured when Fulani herdsmen raped a pregnant woman to death in front of her husband and thereafter cut the throat of the husband in the same Ebonyi state where Dave Umahi governs?

(iv) Is there so much peace and tranquility in Southeast yet a young girl was butchered on her way to farm in Ebonyi state by the same killer Fulani herdsmen?

(v) Is the region the safest place when in Uli, Anambra state, another young girl was raped and cut into pieces and her body strewn all over their farmland?

(vi) Is the region the most peaceful when in Aguleri – the very country home of the Anambra state governor, Willie Obiano – yet another young girl was raped and abducted right in the presence of her parents after they have been beaten to pulp?

(vii) Is the region the most secured when Fulani herders always take their cattle into people's farmlands to eat up every crop therein?

You see, these sad stories have almost become a part of the society in the Southeast region where we record at least one death on daily basis. It is such situation that birthed Eastern Security Network. Of a truth, if a poll is conducted in the old Eastern region, an overwhelming number of people will show support for the security outfit.

The statement by Governor Dave Umahi was not only laughable but an affront and a mockery of the numerous families in the region who have lost their loved ones in the hands of these masquerading Fulani herders.

Moreover, we were meant to understand that Nigeria is practicing democracy – government of the people, by the people and for the people. It thus means that it is the people who have the constitutional obligations to decide what they want. In this case therefore, let the people decide and not the few leaders who are benefitting from the skewed system in the Nigerian state.
